Japanese Program - daruma

This was an icon that was to be associated with one of the sections of the Japanese Program website. It was decided that all the icons combined made the website look too "busy".

A daruma doll in Japanese culture is a type of wish doll and always come without the pupils of the doll's eyes colored in. While making a wish, the left eye pupil is colored in with black ink, and when the wish is granted, the right pupil is then colored in. Daruma dolls are modeled after the founder of Zen.

Japanese Program - maneki neko

This was an icon that was to be associated with one of the sections of the Japanese Program website. It was decided that all the icons combined made the website look too "busy".

Maneki neko (or "beckoning cat") is a figure used in Japan to entice customers into stores. The image of a cat washing it's ears imitates the hand gesture used in Japan to ask someone to come over. Similar to the American hand gesture, the Japanese one features the hand palm down instead of palm up.

Japanese Program - sakura

This was an icon that was to be associated with one of the sections of the Japanese Program website. It was decided that all the icons combined made the website look too "busy".

The sakura flower is considered by many to the be the most iconic flower of Japan. It represents the fleeting nature of life as a result of the flower's short lifespan. Sakura flowers can be found in almost any aspect of Japanese life, especially in the spring blooming season. The sakura blossom is even featured on the 100 yen coin.

Japanese Program/JOSHU - sushi

This was my first project I made in Illustrator. I had originally intended for it to be used on the Japanese Program or JOSHU website. However, it was not an image that was needed at the time and utimately did not end up getting used.

Sushi is the most famous dish that Japan is known for. Sushi began to become popular in the US after World War II and since then all different types of sushi are available - from more traditional to more western styles.

Vietnamese Language Resource - lotus

Similar to the case with the Japanese Program, I made this icon for the Vietnamese website. After making serveral icons, the dragon icon was the only one chosen to remain.

The lotus blossom is the national flower of Vietnam, and no icon set related to Vietnam would be complete without it. It is also the sacred lily of Hinduism and Buddhism and is even named after one of the most famous yoga positions.
